Solid Gold Berjangka |Christine Lagarde has repeatedly said the European Central Bank is “paying attention” to the bond market and declined to comment on the election campaign to dominate her native France. Asked at a panel of annual retreats in Portugal about whether policymakers could do much to prevent market fallout, the president quipped, “Thank you for your question,” before repeating the words he had previously used on the topic.
“Obviously, the European Central Bank has to do what it has to do,” Lagarde said. “Our mission is price stability. Price stability clearly depends on financial stability, and this is part of our job, and we continue to do so, so we are paying attention to it.”

The snap election in France has prompted investors to demand the highest risk premium for debt since 2017 amid worries that the results could lead to more spending and further bloat the country’s finances. The far-right national rally is trying to win the first vote and clinch a parliamentary majority in Sunday’s upcoming runoff.
“I am not going to comment on the political situation in the member states, especially those facing elections,” Lagarde said.
The President of the ECB – the former French Finance Minister – is not much closer to returning home and discussing the situation than his colleagues. For example, Chief economist Philip Lane said the widening of bond spreads “looks like a normal price revision to me.””
Lagarde said officials are looking at the market as usual.
“These are things we monitor — this is part of the job,” she said. “It’s not particularly at this point, we do it all the time. And we are so attentive.”
