Solid Gold Berjangka | The dollar rose against most of the Group of 10 currencies as speculation that Donald Trump will win the U.S. presidential election boosted trading.The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.1%, extending its two-day gain. The chances of a Trump victory have increased this week in the wake of the assassination attempt.The yen weakened against the dollar as local markets reopened after a three-day weekend, highlighting policy differences between the U.S. and Japan.
Daisaku Ueno, chief currency strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities in Tokyo, said, “As the likelihood of Trump’s election increases, the Trump trade of higher stocks, higher bond yields, and a stronger dollar could continue in the short term. If the Trump trade accelerates the yen’s depreciation, “we would expect to see Japanese intervention,” he said.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said in an interview this week that economic data gave him confidence that inflation is falling to the central bank’s 2% target.
USD/JPY rose 0.3% to 158.57.
The Australian and New Zealand dollars underperformed the rest of the currencies as weak Chinese stock prices dampened demand for commodity-related currencies.
AUD/USD fell 0.2% to 0.6750, while NZD/USD dropped 0.2% to 0.6062.
