Solid Gold Berjangka | The number of Americans who filed for new unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, adding to uncertainty about labor market conditions as the Federal Reserve considers monetary policy.

For the week ended August 3, state unemployment benefit applications fell by 17,000 to a seasonally adjusted 233,000. Economists’ estimates were 241,000.The previous week’s applications were revised to 250,000, the highest level since last August. The number of people receiving benefits after the first week, known as continuing applications, rose a seasonally adjusted 6,000 to 1.875 million.

The U.S. central bank has kept its benchmark next-day interest rate in the current range of 5.25% to 5.50% for the past year.Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said last week that changes in the labor market are “broadly consistent with the normalization process,” but that policymakers are “watching closely to see if they begin to show any further signs.”

The monthly jobs report released last week showed that only 114,000 jobs were created in July, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%.

This has raised expectations that the Federal Reserve could begin easing policy in September, possibly with a significant interest rate cut of half a percentage point.
